Fishes, spicy dishes, or exotic recipes are likely to leave a lingering and funky smell in the kitchen and in other areas of an air-conditioned home. When the stinging odour reaches your nose, you can either wait for the smell to eventually dissipate after a few days, or do something about the problem immediately. If you decide on the latter, let this article be your guide.
Make it a habit to wipe down oil and food spatter immediately. Even though you have spatter screens, frying causes oil to splatter on the stove, countertop, and backsplash surfaces. Utilise a rag or sponge dipped in degreasing dish detergent to clean all surfaces close to the stove and then rinse with a damp towel. Remember to include the floor area directly in front of the stove in your clean-up as well.
Persistent smells are likely to remain locked inside your home, unless you air them out. Thus, you should give your home some good old ventilation from time to time. You can do this by opening windows on opposite sides of the house to generate air flow. Having an exhaust fan will also help.
Prepare a sweet scented potpourri by mixing water, citrus peels or slices, a few cloves, a cinnamon stick and rosemary in a small pot. Next, simmer the ingredients for a couple of hours. If necessary, add more liquid to prevent the mixture from drying out. You may substitute the items above with your favourite fragrant herbs and spices.
As a variation to the concoction above, mix equal parts vinegar and water with a slice or two of your desired citrus in a small pot. The acidic content will neutralise any odour molecules that may have settled on kitchen surfaces.
